Clinical Applications of Integrative Acupuncture Orthopedics

Grand Rounds features clinical application of the principles and practices of integrative acupuncture physical medicine to actual patients in a clinical theater setting, performed by Head Instructor Anthony Von der Muhll, L.Ac., DNBAO, FAAPM.

Seven cases will be presented and discussed, using contemporary orthopedic and traditional AOM concepts and terminology, and treatment will be demonstrated, covering:

  • Cervicogenic and tension headaches
  • Neck and thoracic pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Elbow, forearm, wrist and hand pain
  • Lumbo-sacral, hip and buttock pain
  • Thigh and knee pain
  • Calf, ankle and foot pain

History, Physical Exam and Diagnosis

For each demonstration case, the instructor will perform and discuss:

  • Clinical anatomy/patho-anatomy and relationships to AOM jing-luo and jing-jin theory.
  • Etiology, natural history, and prognosis with treatment.
  • Best procedures for taking a comprehensive and accurate history, including subjective assessments of functional capacities.
  • Best procedures for a integrative orthopedic and neurological physical examination and baseline evaluation of functional status, including:
    • Joint range-of-motion and stability
    • Muscle strength
    • Sensory function
    • Special orthopedic tests
    • Functional capacity deficits
  • Differential and working diagnoses in standard medical (ICD-10) and AOM-specific pattern identification terms.

Demonstration Treatment and Documentation

For each demonstration case, the instructor will perform and discuss:

  • Case management and AOM treatment plans, including rationales and recommended frequency and duration, risks and potential side-effects, and prognosis.
  • Best practices for treatment with AOM modalities, including:
  • Alternatives to AOM modalities, including referral to physician care for serious/urgent medical conditions, if present.
  • Prevention and management of any adverse effects from AOM treatment.
  • Documentation of history, physical examination, and treatment plans, including informed consent and discussion of any alternatives and referrals, and performance of procedures.

Following demonstration of treatment, the instructor will facilitate class discussion of the patient’s case.
